English

The English curriculum is designed to engage our young people and promote a feeling of confidence within the subject. The differentiated learning caters for a wide variety of learning needs to suit all learners. We aim to challenge pupils’ technical accuracy within writing, as well as confidence linked to reading, to improve comprehension skills and tackle common misconceptions that lead to comprehension failure.

We are a reading school, with a keen focus on creating opportunity to stretch and challenge in reading to enrich imagination, creativity and understanding. Collectively, these skills are transferable across all subjects and will support learning as a result. Across an academic year, our pupils may cover topics such as: narrative or descriptive writing; they will study an appropriate novel; we will study a range of non-fiction reading and writing and an array of topic-based schemes to facilitate their learning within the subject.

Our schemes are designed to bridge the gaps from previous learning, whilst also highlighting the skills required to move forward and ultimately help prepare for GCSE level English. The sequence of topics includes a range of diverse texts that highlight different cultures, values and morals. Within this, pupils are taught to express their ideas and opinions imaginatively with emphasis on communication, both written and spoken.

Most importantly, we want our young people to enjoy the subject and understand its value.
