If your child has a medical condition, you must inform us and complete Medical Information forms, which include any prescribed medication that may need to be given at school and a healthcare plan. We cannot give any non-prescribed medication.
In line with government guidance, the management of medications at Reach Academy is as follows. Reach Academy will:
- Only give medicine at school if it’s essential for your child’s health or attendance.
- Not provide medication without written permission from a parent under the age of 16, unless it’s an emergency and prescribed without the parent’s knowledge.
- Not give aspirin to children under 16 unless prescribed by a doctor.
If possible, medicines should be prescribed to be taken outside school hours. We only accept prescribed medicines that are:
-
- In-date
- In the original packaging from the pharmacy
- Clearly labelled with instructions
Insulin is an exception – it must be in date, but can be in a pen or pump.
If a child is prescribed a controlled drug and is capable, they may carry it themselves. However, giving it to another child is illegal.
Staff may give a controlled drug to the child it was prescribed for.
Where clinically possible, medicines should be prescribed in dose frequencies that enable them to be taken outside school hours.
